The Little Horn Speakers
These horns turn the audio world upside down. They posses a life-like soundstage unlike anything ever heard. With the Little Horn Speakers, the soundstage gets bigger, the instruments spread apart, the stage unfolds.

A special inverted design enables the low frequencies to emerge at the top of the enclosure. An octagonally fluted horn carries them upward and lets them flourish into the room. The immense structural rigidity of the horns octagonal geometry minimizes resonances yet allows sound waves to expand freely the way nature intended. There is simply something beautiful here, not just bass frequency reproduction, but a spatial imaging that belies the speaker’s size.

The Design & Construction:
Little Horns are handcrafted entirely in Chicago, Illinois. Their unique Patented design is made using high-density fiberglass. The base  is made using heavy, void-free Baltic birch plywood. The base houses the driver and acts as a compression chamber for the horn. The horns are fitted to their base like a neck should be fitted to a guitar — with an exacting alignment and flush fitting surface to ensure the best performance and tonal transmission.

Dimensions:

  • The Little Horns are 36” tall overall
  • The bell of the horn is 14” across
  • The base is an 8” cube and will sit nicely on a 10” deep shelf

Specifications:

  • 8 ohms
  • 90 db sensitivity
  • 77Hz - 23kHz frequency response
  • Power handling: 24 watts maximum

Speakers/Drivers:
The Little Horn Speakers use Fostex FE-108 Sigma full-range drivers. These cutting edge speakers have a beautiful cast-frame and a radical new cone design with a particularly even response. These Fostex drivers perform effortlessly in the Specimen Little Horns and present a unique soundstage that gives listeners a brand new, intimate, three-dimensional audio experience. The FE-108 drivers are chosen specifically based on their proven performance in a great variety of experimental designs.

History of Specimen Audio Horns:
Over 10 years ago, Specimen began experimenting with horn shapes to use in conjunction with musical instrument amplifiers. The results were impressive. Word spread and various musicians including harmonica players, banjo players, and a certain violinist recognized their excellence in amplifying these difficult-to-amplify instruments. It is the unique projection and efficiency of the Specimen horn shape that is ideally suited for these applications.

In the hi-fi world, audiophiles have been pairing low-wattage amplifiers with vintage horn enclosures since the 1930s. However, vintage enclosures are difficult to find, expensive and too large for most homes. These Little Horn Speakers solve these problems with beautiful theatrical presentation, superior sound and a small, bookshelf format.

Larger versions of these Little Horns have graced the stages alongside Andrew Bird at Carnegie Hall, Austin City Limits, Chicago’s Lyric Opera House, Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl, Chicago’s Millennium Park and have been featured at the TED Conference, on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
